ROCHESTER, Mich. - Senator John McCain says that as president he would make advancing religious liberty a priority in international relations.

At a campaign stop in Michigan, the Republican candidate said, "There is no right more fundamental to a free society than the free practice of religion."

But McCain said tens of thousands of believers suffer imprisonment and persecution in China, Iran, Burma, Sudan, North Korea and Saudi Arabia. He said, "No society that denies religious freedom can ever rightly claim to be good in some other way."

McCain pledged to make religious rights a priority in dealing with U.S. allies and in every international forum.
