WASHINGTON - Congress' two Muslim members are urging the U.S. government to lead efforts to end the violence in Sudan's Darfur region, where more than 200,000 people have been killed and 2.5 million have been displaced.
House Democrats Keith Ellison of Minnesota and Andre Carson of Indiana took part in a "Muslim Voices for Darfur" news conference on Capitol Hill Wednesday. Sudan is a predominantly Muslim African nation.
Carson said "it's arguable" whether the U.S. can claim to be one of the world's greatest nations unless it becomes "a leader on this issue."
Others at the news conference said oil-rich Muslim nations haven't been doing their share.
New Jersey Congressman Donald Payne said, "States that are making fantastic profits on oil today have not given one penny to Muslim brothers who are starving, who are being killed."
