CBNNews.com - JERUSALEM, Israel - Israeli archaeologists found a 2,600-year-old seal that confirms the biblical plot to kill the Jewish prophet Jeremiah.
A team of archaeologists working in the City of David, led by Hebrew University of Jerusalem's Prof. Eilat Mazar, discovered the seal, also known as a bulla, bearing the inscription Gedalyahu ben Pashur, a minister under King Zedekiah (597-586 BC).
Three years ago, the team unearthed another bulla, inscribed with the name Yehukual ben Shelemyahu, a few yards from where the latest seal was found.
Jeremiah 38:1-4 records how these two men, accompanied by two others, asked King Zedekiah to put Jeremiah to death for his prophesies concerning Jerusalem.
"Only rarely do archaeologists come across findings of significant figures in history, which help lift the dust of history and bring the biblical story to life in such a tangible way," Mazar said.
The latest excavation is jointly sponsored by the Shalem Center and the City of David Foundation, with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem providing academic support.
